Tai Chi Broadsword Training in Greece

Learn step by step the complete Yang style Broadsword form from a Tai Chi practitioner of 30 years. This course is aimed at people who have ideally studied some Tai Chi and want to learn a weapon form. It will also include warm up Qigong exercises and you will be working on the general principles of Tai Chi that should help with any other forms you already know. People who have studied other martial arts or are used to activities that require a degree of body control, such as dance or sport, may also enjoy this training retreat.

The rooms are available for single or twin use. Note that Yoga Therapy Greece can find someone to share if you are on your own. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom, air-con, a balcony, and a great sea view.

Program

On Saturday evening, there will be a welcoming, allocation of the accommodation, an orientation of Agios Pavlos area, and dinner, while on the following Saturday morning after breakfast is the departure.

The training takes place in the morning, 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., followed by breakfast and in the afternoon, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., followed by dinner. The rest of the day is free time to rest, do your own practice, and enjoy the beach and the local area.

The training will consist of various warm-up exercises including some Qigong. The main focus will then be to learn step by step the Yang Tai Chi Broadsword form. You will work in detail on the sequence but also on the specific energy of this sword form, the circular motion, the power, and the extension of Chi to the weapon. You shall also be working, depending on individual needs, on the general Tai Chi principles that should help with your existing Tai Chi forms. There will be a DVD available so that so can remember what you have learned.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is studied in the West for its unique health benefits. Its root is as an internal martial art which emphasizes working with one's internal energy and softness, with less emphasis on muscle strength. It helps generate a strong flow of Chi, it aids Chi’s circulation, and most importantly, it works to balance Chi (energy) both within one's body and with the surrounding environment.

It consists of a series of usually slow movements in a specific sequence. The movements are fluid, with natural and comfortable postures. Making it suitable for all ages and abilities. When practiced correctly, what looks soft is actually strong, and when combined with spirit and intent, energy flows freely creating effortless power. It is truly an exercise of the mind, body, and spirit.

What is Qigong?

Qigong, which is closely related to Tai Chi, combines various postures with breathing techniques to strengthen and allow Qi (energy) to flow within the body. In Qigong there may be no movement, movements may be very gentle or at times more vigorous. Some movements are very large, others are subtler and almost not seen at all. Exercises may be carried out standing or at times sitting.

The deeper one practices the more you can understand the purpose of each movement and the very specific effect on body and mind. Even a small amount of regular practice can have the most profound effects. Both Tai Chi and Qigong are linked to the study of acupuncture and acupressure and the body's Meridian lines. Some self-massage techniques are also taught with this in mind.

The training takes place overlooking the awesome bay of Agios Pavlos in South Crete. The hotel is located on a small cliff with great views of the picturesque sandy beach with lovely warm and crystal clear blue waters. The beach is only 50 meters from the rooms while incredible stretches of sand dunes lie only 10 minutes walk away. The region is one of exceptional natural beauty. Rugged and unspoiled, the area offers breathtaking scenery and glorious beaches making this a very special place to visit.

Food

The restaurant of Agios Pavlos overlooks the sea with a spectacular view of the bay and the Libyan Sea. The breakfast is a la carte and the dinner will consist of Cretan vegetarian dishes. Greek and local wine is available for purchase with your meal. For lunch, you can purchase snacks or there is a wide variety of Greek and Cretan dishes available including grilled meat, fresh fish, as well as vegetarian or vegan choices. Snacks can be bought from the café snack bar or mini market.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Heraklion International Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (HER) or Chania International Airport (CHQ). They are both approximately the same distance with the transfer taking about two hours by taxi or hire car (price not included). Yoga Therapy Greece can arrange for the sharing of taxis to reduce costs.

Arrival by ferry / boat

There are also ferries from Piraeus (Athens) and Santorini to Crete should you want to combine your visit with other areas of Greece.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 35% of the total price.
  • The deposit is fully refundable if the booking is cancelled up to 55 days before the arrival date.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
