The Chinese healing retreat at Tianmeng Academy is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, healthy diet including elements of Inedia (fasting), hot springs treatments, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and meditation in a friendly and supportive environment. Surrounded by highly qualified TCM doctor, Kung Fu Masters (Tai Chi, Qi Gong and meditation), assistants, and translators, it aims to bring the body into harmony, balance the Ying and Yang, as well as the movement and transformation of the five elements in the human body. At the beginning of the retreat, you will be individually checked up by a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, and based upon the diagnosis, an individual dietary plan will be provided.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

The Traditional Chinese Medicine used at Tianmeng Academy includes herbal soup treatments, acupuncture, massages and cupping therapy, moxibustion, Gua Sha (scrape therapy), food therapy, medical bath, medical foot therapy and individual dietary program according to the patient’s health condition. The most important quality of Traditional Chinese Medicine is that it seeks the roots of the health issue or discomfort of the body rather than curing the symptoms temporarily.

Therapeutic principles of TCM are decided according to the concept of holism and treatment based on syndrome differentiation, clinically guiding the composition of prescriptions, and the selection of herbs. Its characteristics include:

Seeking the root of the disease while treating. Concentrating treatment on the root cause means to find the root cause of a disease and focus the treatment on it because the root cause is responsible for the emergence of syndrome.

Regulation of yin and yang, including reduce excess and supple insufficiency, by which we can restore the normal state of yin and yang.

Normal treatment and paradoxical treatment. Normal treatment, also called reverse treatment, refers to treatment opposite to the nature disease, suitable for the treatment of majority of disease. Paradoxical treatment, also called submissive treatment, refers to treat disease according to its false manifestations.

Phenomena(biao) and essence(ben), chronic and acute. Treat the symptom in the emergency condition while treat the root of the disease in the chronic syndrome. Clinically, some disease marked by emergency both biao and ben, should be treated on both sides.

Strength healthy qi and remove pathogenic factors.

Same disease treated with different methods, different diseases treated with same method.

Abidance by individuality (age, sex and constitution), locality and seasons.

Therapeutic methods of TCM are diaphoresis - sweating the patient, emetic therapy, purgation, counteraction and harmonization, warming and stimulation making the patient’s internal organs active, clearing therapy, dispersing inflammatory or other lesions, giving the patient tonics.

Herbal soup treatment

Herbal decoctions in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are the highest form of herbal medicine to be lifestyle dietary modification or prescribed medicine. Many Chinese herbs are used in cooking like “ginger”, “cinnamon”, “cardamom”, etc., and some herbs are known in the Western world, such as “gou ji berries” or “lotus seeds”. There are times when we need strong medicine, to heal the body from different diseases. That is when traditional Chinese doctors prescribe herbs.

Traditional Chinese herb soup (decoction) is based on diagnostics methods of inspection, auscultation, inquiry, pulse-taking, and palpation, combining every patient’s personal constitution and actual body situation. According to the traditional principles of forming recipe (cardinal herb, assistant herb, adjuvant herb and envoy herb), in the meanwhile, combining every herbal nature (cold, heat, warm, and cool) with herbal flavors (pungent, sweet, sour, bitter, and salty), and making the perfect healing formula. The combination of herbs is always based on “Five Elements Theory“ then selecting natural herbs provided by the formula and decoct elaborately. You will drink the herbal soup under the guidance of a traditional Chinese doctor.

Traditional Chinese herbal preparations, prescribed individually by the experienced doctor have normally no side effects. In the same time they are very effective for treatment of large number of chronicle diseases, which can be treated only symptomatically in the Western world. Herbal soups contain many bioactive compounds with potentially deleterious as well as beneficial effects.

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of TCM. We know this term from Latin, acus (needle) and punctura (to puncture) involving thin needles into the body at acupuncture points. It can be associated with the application of heat, pressure, or laser light to these same points. Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief, though it is also used for a wide range of other conditions.

Clinical practice varies depending on the country. There is a diverse range of acupuncture approaches, involving different philosophies. The method used in TCM is likely the most widely adopted in the U.S.; it is rarely used alone but rather as an adjunct to other forms of treatment. Acupuncture is effective for chemotherapy - induced nausea/vomiting, postoperative nausea/vomiting, and headache.

Acupuncture is safe when done by an appropriately trained practitioner using clean needle technique and single-use needles. When properly delivered, it has no side effects. Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific acupuncture points along the meridians of the body using thin needles. Classically, acupuncture is individualized and based on philosophy and intuition of the doctor. In traditional acupuncture, the acupuncturist decides which points to treat by observing and questioning the patient to make a diagnosis according to the tradition used.

In TCM, the four diagnostic methods are: inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiring, and palpation. One acupuncture session is not enough. In modern acupuncture, a consultation is followed by taking the pulse on both arms and inspecting the tongue. This initial evaluation may last up to sixty minutes. Subsequent visits typically last about a half an hour. The number and frequency of acupuncture sessions vary, but most practitioners do not think one session is sufficient.

A common treatment plan for a single complaint usually involves six to twelve treatments, to be carried out over a few months. A typical session entails lying still while approximately five to twenty needles are inserted; for the majority of cases, the needles will be left in place for ten to twenty minutes.

Massages and cupping therapy

Massage is manual manipulation of muscles, connective tissues, tendons and ligaments to enhance a person’s health, longevity and well-being. Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure - structured, unstructured, stationary, or moving - tension, motion, or vibration, done manually or with mechanical aids. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm, feet, or a massage device.

Benefit for massage: reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles, rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, and promote overall health and wellness, necessary in sports and business organizations, stimulates the immune system, reduces depressions, stimulates the concentration, longevity, prevents chronicle diseases, reduce musculoskeletal pain including low back pain and neck pain.

Cupping therapy involves placing glass, bamboo or plastic jars on the skin and creating a vacuum by suctioning out the air. The underlying tissue is raised, or sucked, partway into the cup. The purpose of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove “heat” and pull out the toxins. Not only TCM uses cupping, this therapy has a long history.

Variations of cupping treatment were used by ancient Egyptians, North American Indians, early Greeks, and in other Asian and European countries. Cupping therapy was recommended by Hippocrates - the “Father of Modern Medicine”. Usually you will feel a tight sensation in the area of the cup. This sensation is relaxing and soothing. Cups may be moved around or left in place; they may remain on your body briefly or for longer amounts of time.

Common area to be cupped is the back, although cups work well on other areas, too - particularly on fleshy sections of the body. You must not be afraid if after the cupping session your skin turns red, blue or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was cupped. The skin discoloration can last from a few days to a couple of weeks, but is normally not painful.

Benefits of Cupping Therapy: removes toxins from the body, stimulates the flow of fresh blood, lymph, and “Qi” to the affected area and throughout the body, helps patients with the flu, colds, coughs, back and muscle pain, poor circulation, anxiety, allergies, fevers, aches and other pains, relieves stiffness and helps to cure back injuries, “secret weapon” for athletes and people who would like to stay healthy, strong and flexible for a long time.

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy using “moxa” made from dried leaves of the Chinese herb “mugwort” (Vulgaris). It plays an important role in the traditional medical (TCM) systems of China and other Asian countries. The most common form of moxibustion treatment is made with “moxa stick”, normally patients can do it without a doctor.

There are 3 main kinds of moxibusion. Practitioners use “moxa” to warm regions and acupuncture points, they can use it indirectly, directly on the skin “direct moxa” or in combination with acupuncture needles “heating needle”. Moxibusion is a complex and varied therapy and can be used individually according to every patients’ state of health.

It includes “breatharian inedia”, “Dan medicine inedia”, and “Acupuncture inedia”. When Inedia comes to some extent, human can be full of energy without eating and drinking cereals or meat. It is a good way to cure diseases, strengthen physical health, stabilize emotions as well as inspire personal potentials.

Inedia is of benefit to us in many different aspects:

Curing diseases: It can help to ease the following diseases: hypertension, coronary disease, arteriosclerosis, hyperlipemia, cerebrovascular sequelae, gastritis, chronic gastroenteritis, constipation, diarrhea, haemorrhoids, hepatitis, cholecystitis, gall-stone, Earlier-cirrhosis, fatty liver, pancreatitis, diabetes, nephritis, myoma of uterus, ovarian cyst, irregular menstruation, spermatorrhe, premature ejaculation, impotence, phymatosis, asthma, insomnia and dreaminess, psychoneurosis, alopecia, arthritis. Among them the clinical efficacy for cancer, hypertension, diabetes, dermatosis and weight loss.

Maintaining beauty and keeping young: It can speed up skin metabolism, accelerate cell growth to make people younger. This is why people who had carried out “Inedia” look younger than their actual age.

Easing emotional stress: For the people who have a lot mental pressure and tension, Inedia can relieve stress and make them feel relaxed and in peace.

Cleaning intestinal tract: When there is waste in the intestinal tract, Inedia is one of the only ways to remove them thoroughly. Normally when a man already started Inedia for around 4-5 days, there is still excrement, when it comes to the 7th day, all the waste in the body would be eliminated from the body. This is why we say if you want to do “Inedia” you should insist at least 7 days. As the waste is eliminated, the function of the digestive system can be much better.

Detox: Inedia is a special detoxification method, it is a thorough cleaning of full-body bone, muscle, skin, viscera, blood, and all kinds of excretory ducts and secretions which improves the human body cleanliness and helps to promote the body adjustment system.

Dredging blood vessels: It can help the body process fats and cholesterol more efficiently so as not to block the blood vessels. This way it can reduce the probability of diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, cerebral thrombosis, and diabetes. A healthy heart and blood vessels are an important assurance for longevity.

Losing weight: It can help to control your weight. Overweight people can become slim after Inedia while underweight people can become a bit plump after Inedia. Inedia can expel the toxins in the body. When a person finishes Inedia and returns to oral food intake, the digestion and absorption will be better so as to keep in good shape.

Rejuvenation: Inedia can make a human body more dynamic, joints more flexible, artery more elastic as well as reduce blood fat, reduce age pigment and wrinkles, and increase sexual capacity so as to make human younger.
