For centuries the practice of yoga has been used to develop physical, mental, and spiritual health. Sumalee Phuket has found that the benefits of yoga complement the Muay Thai training program perfectly.
Yoga does more than burn calories and tone muscles. It is a total mind-body workout that combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing or relaxation. The benefits include:
Rhian Miller is 25 years old and has been practicing yoga intermittently since she was 19. During a trip to Bali in 2013, Rhian became captivated by the spiritual side of yoga practice. She began to focus more on pranayama (breathing techniques). On returning to Phuket, she started practicing regularly. In August 2016 she completed 200 hours yoga teacher training with WAY Yoga Alliance. Rhian continues learning by attending regular workshops in Phuket and elsewhere in Asia. She also hosts workshops with invited specialists from different yoga disciplines.
Khru Keng is 30 years old and joins the team from the Surin Province in the East of Thailand. He started training at nine years old with friends and has been part of the Muay Thai scene ever since. He also began fighting locally at nine years old before joining Jor. Looksamut Gym in the Samut Prakan province of Bangkok. He is a former Chonburi province Champion, but perhaps his most notable achievement was winning a trophy at the Channel 7 awards for best technique. Keng is best known for his powerful and precise elbows, particularly his back spinning elbow. He speaks basic english.
Khru Nat (fighting name Mongkol Thong) is 29 and from Nong Bua Lamphu in Esaan. He started practicing Muay Thai at nine years of age and had his first fight the year after. His fighting style is Muay Femur with a mixture of Muay Khao. Khru Nat is also well known for his elegant “Wai Khru” and “Ram Muay” and has won an award for the most beautiful Ram Muay in Thailand. Khru Nat has fought in Lumpinee, Omnoi and Rajadamnern Stadiums and has over 200 fights under his belt. He speaks reasonably fluent English and has many years experience as a trainer.
At 23 years old Na is the youngest member of Sumalee's training team. Na is originally from the Nakhon Si Tammarat Province of Thailand and started training at 10 years old at Kiat Wipat Gym before moving to Sit. Sien Buum Gym. He has had many professional fights and describes his fighting and training style as technical, with a big emphasis on knees and kicks. Na has a basic understanding of English and is learning more with every day.
Khru Sam is originally from Surin and started training at 10 years of age at Por ChedChai Gym under the fighting name “Petchsampran”. He took an interest in Muay Thai from watching his father, who was also a fighter. Khru Sam fought in some of the most high profile stadiums in Thailand including Lumpinee and Omnoi. His fighting style is Muay Kao and has over 90 fights under his belt. Khru Sam has a basic understanding of English.
Khru Rune (fighting name Phetpirune Sumalee) comes from Surin. He started fighting when he was eight years old. He is good friends with Khru Keng. They have both trained together back in Surin. At just 19 years of age, Khru Rune has over 60 fights under his belt with most of his fights ending in a knockout. His style is somewhat similar to Pornsanae Sitmonchai. Khru Rune is still very much an active fighter and will continue to fight locally
