Daily schedule Monday to Saturday

Sumalee Boxing Gym runs two 2 hours group Muay Thai training sessions daily Monday to Saturday. The classes take place at 07:30 and 16:00 to ensure the weather is at its coolest and to allow for maximum relaxation and recovery in between sessions. Saturday morning training often takes place on nearby picturesque beaches (leave the camp at 07:00).

Training styles

Typical group training session

  • Bag work - developing strength and technique for neck, hands, knees, elbows, and legs
  • Clinching - unique to Muay Thai and particularly important for those students who wish to fight
  • Cool down - Particularly important aspect of the work out as it reduces the possibility of muscle cramping
  • Muay Thai technique - 5 x 3 minute rounds on the pads working individually with a trainer to improve technique and build speed, power, and endurance
  • Stretching - (neck, arm, shoulder, hip, leg, ankle)
  • Shadow boxing
  • Sparring - focusing on speed, footwork and endurance rather than power
  • Warm up - e.g. running, skipping, tyre bounce

Improving cardio-vascular fitness

Improving cardio-vascular fitness is a key component of a Muay Thai training programme. Most students achieve this by supplementing their training with running sessions, increasing the distances during the course of their stay. Many choose to run before the early morning group session as this is the coolest part of the day. There is a choice of running routes of various lengths and intensities directly from the gym.

Muay Thai private lessons

Many students choose to complement their group classes with private one-on-one sessions with one or more of our instructors to maximise their training and focus on personal goals. Private lessons are available outside of group training times and last one hour.

The Muay Thai trainers and the yoga instructor were amazing. They pushed me to much more than I expected out of me. Also the food is delicious and the people nice. "Me and my wife were in our honeymoon and we decided to do something not specific. So we started looking for Muay Thai gyms around Patong and Phuket."

"After to tries at the gyms by the 2 main MT stadiums in Patong i was almost ready to drop the idea. The guys there spoke very bad English and were very arrogant with us. At one of the gyms, the trainer was eating and turned his back on us and waived us to go and said: you go now, come tomorrow! At the other one, they were just trying to sell us tickets to the watch the matches."

"So we looked on Tripadvisor and found Sumalee. We gave it a try and it turned out good. I took part in 2 group classes, morning and evening and my wife did a yoga class around noon. We also ate there."

"Training was awesome, the trainers spoke good enough English for people to understand what they have to do. The session were very well structured, the ideas were clear: warm up was warm up, stretching was stretching, shadow boxing and drills were also as they are supposed to be. I also had a few rounds of sparring which were balanced enough. All the trainers were good."

"I really recommend and I am looking forward to come back and spend more time training."

"Unless you stay at Sumalee for longer you should either rent a bike or a car. It was easy to get there by taxi in the morning, but it took us an hour to get a taxi in the evening."

"Lynne and her staff and trainers were amazing! They were super accommodating about welcoming a large group of children and adults at the last minute and organized amazing trainers for everyone. The kids had a wonderful time and are all inspired to continue when we get home. The entire experience was fantastic from start to finish. All of the training was pitched just right for each of us with our different levels of experience and everyone at the gym is so friendly and helpful and patient. I can't wait for my next trip!"

"I traveled to Thailand hoping for an authentic training experience, and feel I got it. Although I did have a great experience,I want to give both the good and bad so that future clients can get a better idea of the type of camp it is. "

"First I will start off with the owner Lynne. She is as professional an owner can be when dealing with clients and staff. Firm but fair. I asked a lot of questions and received an answer almost immediately. "

"Next is the facility itself. My first impression was the pictures on the website were not exactly what they seemed, and rarely are. My main issue was the old dirty mats on the ground. They were very thin and laid out over concrete floor, which can seriously damage your calves and shins if you aren't conditioned for that. They also had a bit of a funky smell that no cleaning product could help. I saw the mats being cleaned,so I know that wasn't the issue. Maybe invest in new mats after certain period of use. "

"They have 2 boxing rings. Both in great condition, and clean. I always preferred doing my pad work in them. You will have the opportunity to use them on a regular basis. They had enough bags throughout the gym and I had no problem getting one to use,but wow they are hard . Respect these bags or risk injury. "

"If you need gloves or wraps they have them, but wouldn't recommend them as they have definitely been used. But why show up without your own gear anyways, right? But if you do,just head over to their shop and buy some for a pretty good price. "

"The trainer's there are awesome! This is where Sumalee really shines. They will know your level of training almost immediately and go from there. If you have a weakness they will fix it. During training sessions, you will never get the impression they don't care. They are there help you get better...Period! Some of them will show you some pretty sneaky attacks if you ask. My personal favorite was Lip. Mostly because I found him to be very technical and that's what I wanted. One thing that amused me was doing each session listening to some of Thailand's best love songs. Anyone who had trained there will know what I'm talking about. "

"The lodging was okay. It's not the Ritz,so don't expect that. The bed was clean and the room was tidy. I had an issue with plumbing but it was dealt with promptly. Rooms have air, which I found to be a lifesaver after training. "

"The food was amazing. I would recommend the meal plan if you are there for training only. The restaurant is on the grounds and was super convenient. If you are there to explore a little, then the meal plan might not be your thing. If you have a request for something, they will do their best to make it. The menu has a lot of options to choose from and I took advantage of that. "

"So if you are looking for a place to sharpen your skills, this is the place. If I decide to go to Phuket again I will head over to Sumalee, no problem. "

"Lynn, Rhian, Jack, trainers and staff, thanks for an awesome 4-week trip. The room was clean and spacious, the food was fantastic, and training was tailored to the individual even in group training. A mixed group of people staying from pro fighters to novices (like myself). No egos and what you put in is what you get out - four weeks later and 10 kilograms lighter I'm sad to be leaving but will return without a doubt. Thanks again Sumalee team (and the fighters who took the time to help me: Martin, Liam, Gunn, the Irish and English connection - it was truly an honor to see the dedication you guys have for your art). If you are in doubt, Sumalee is the place to stay!"

"Phenomenal training experience! Loved the gym and the instructors, couldn't get enough of the training. The atmosphere is fun yet focused. I have a background in martial arts but came there to train with my roommate who has had no combat experience. The instructors were great at showing her the ropes and making her feel comfortable, while at the same time challenging me and expanding my fighting base. We had an awesome time making friends with the other fighters there also, while exploring the local countryside which has so much to offer of the real Thailand and not the crowded tourist hot spots. I can't wait to come back!"

"This is by far the best place to come and train in Thailand! The trainers are very, very good and whether you are a beginner or advanced they treat everyone the same and have a lot of patience to make sure you do it. The on site accommodation is very good and the food in the kitchen is very well priced and tastes amazing! I definitely think if you come to Phuket to come and train here. Thank you for all your hospitality and we can't wait to come back again."

During my first training session I was surprised to see the number of people who attended the camp along with all the trainers getting around giving everybody their time and attention to improve their boxing. after my time at sumalee I was sad to see it go but I hope I will come back soon"

"I came here for a few days after touring Thailand; wanted to get the Muay Thai experience. First off - the facilities are amazing; clean rooms, very nice pool, great restaurant (with amazing food!), and super friendly and helpful staff. I played pick-up soccer every day in the afternoon right before dinner; you get that gym-family feeling for sure! There is a weight room you can use, too. I came back to the States leaner and feeling healthier after my few days there. The training is the best. The staff and trainers work with you no matter what skill level you are. The only con for me is that I did not have the chance to stay longer - I will be back for sure. It is tucked away which is just what I wanted so I could focus on fitness, but there are activities you can do as well, such as wakeboarding."

"I along with a friend had the pleasure of visiting Sumalee Boxing Gym in Phuket in March 2014. From the minute we arrived we were greeted by the smiling faces of the amazing staff and trainers. From Lynne and the office staff who answered all questions and assisted us with all our needs,to Oron and the other awesome Thai trainers who catered to all our Muay Thai training needs. We stayed on site in one of the air conditioned twin share rooms which was very comfortable and met all our needs. The food plan whilst staying at Sumalee was great and I can say that we were never stuck for choice. All the meals were healthy and portions never left us hungry. Sumalee had everything covered, even scooter hire at very reasonable rates. We hired a scooter for 2 weeks of our stay which enabled us to see the sites around Phuket.Lynne and the staff were more than helpful with directions to local temples, beaches, restaurant's etc. With regards to the training, Wow!! Each and every technique was broken down right back to basics and then rebuilt in a way that was easy to apply whilst increasing speed and power. I cannot speak highly enough of the trainers at Sumalee. When it came to the group classes the trainers cater for everyone and all levels, with a smile and lots of laughs. Overall my time at Sumalee Boxing Gym was a time I will never forget and value forever, and hope to be back to visit and continue my training in the coming months. Thanks to the whole team."
