Balanced meals prepared by nutritionist and health specialists

Songshan Shaolin Traditional Wushu Academy offers balanced meals which follow the principles of Yin-Yang. The academy works together with the nutritionist Kai Jun and the doctor Wang Peng Fei to ensure that our students have the best nourishment while training Kung Fu. You can have an outstanding master but if your meals are poor, your kung fu will not improve very much due to lack of vital energy called Qi.

When a student arrives at our Academy, he/she will have a consultation with Songshan Shaolin Academys doctor and nutritionist. Depending on their previous lifestyle, some students lack nutrients which are vital for Qi or they are overweight - these students will be recommended to follow a particular diet in order to increase their Qi and lose the excess weight in a healthy way. The food will be then prepared based on these recommendations. Complementary proteins are found in rice (black or brown), dry beans, tofu and beans (we offer yellow, red, green and black beans).

The academy offers three nutritious and balanced meals per day. Each meal consist of good carbohydrates (85% of the individual calorie intake) such as rice (black or brown - we do not offer white rice due to its poor nutritional value and bleaching process), oats, whole grain pasta, and different type of beans. Good carbohydrates release slow the energy, and it will keep you going for hours.

Intense physical activity could potentially damage your muscles if you don't have the right amount of protein intake in your diet. Your daily intake of protein depends on your body weight and is up to 35% of your daily calorie intake and depends on your physical activity. We offer high quality protein such as lean meat (in our Academy is forbidden to eat meat with fat or to cook with pig fat which is usual practice in China), poultry (chicken, duck), fish, and eggs.

The academy offers on daily basis fresh fruits on season and fresh protein drinks (made in house from peanuts, almonds, and beans). The academy also offers a big range of algae which are excellent for longevity, as well as homemade collagen foods for a young skin. The academy buys all the groceries locally and they will ensure that they are organically grown. If you like particular dishes offered, our nutritionist can teach you how to prepare them. You will also have lessons on nutrition and Yin-Yang principles of healthy lifestyle.

Yin Yang principles of a healthy lifestyle

You will take charge of your belly, mind, health and life! The academy understands how important a healthy and balanced meal is for a demanding daily routine. The food is the fuel for your daily routine, and it can nourish or sabotage you. Some of the students have special requirements such as vegetarian food, vegan, and halal. The academy is very flexible and happy to meet any dietary requirements. All the dietary requirements are met following the Yin-Yang principles.

The Qi (life force energy) is in the food. Life is not static; everything is constantly moving, changing, and shifting. Yin & Yang are the opposing and complementary energy forces that determine the natural order of the universe. These forces are reflected in our cells and the human body. Food formulas have yin and yang proprieties.

When you digest food, the Qi sustains you. The flow of energy must be vigorous in order to maintain good health. Your Qi can be improved and maintained by changing what you eat. The Taoist approach to eating focuses on the food itself bringing in energy. The western approach is focused on how the food eaten creates the metabolic energy.

When you digest dead food, which lacks Qi, you feel sluggish and lethargic. Examples of dead foods are: old vegetables, frozen meat, processed milk, and fruits. Processed and refined foods also lack energy and fill the bodies with chemicals and toxins that block energy flow. If dead energy in dead food is allowed to stagnate, it could actually poison you with harmful Qi.

The closer food is to its natural state and the less sophisticated, processed or refined it is, the more nutritional value is shared with our bodies. Therefore, meals can be very simple. Natural, fresh, alive food contains goodness and nourishment.

The goal is to find balance. Eating predominantly Yin foods causes the body to produce only Yin energy, which is darker, slower-moving, and has a pacifying effect. It gives a feeling of lightness, making the body less full and cooler. Eating predominantly Yang foods causes the body to produce only Yang energy, which is faster, hotter, and much more energetic.

Yang foods boost mental strength and encourage assertive and aggressive behaviors. The best way to good health is to choose foods that are balanced, containing both the Yin & Yang energies. Foods that are predominantly Yin or Yang should be treated with caution. Use this balance theory for all areas that need balance.

For those with passive or wishy-washy thoughts, those who are disorganized, lazy or apathetic, eat more Yang energy foods. For those with rigid thinking patterns and driven personalities, the Yin energy foods will help to restore equilibrium. Use this knowledge to balance your system whenever the delicate balance is disrupted.

Balanced Yin & Yang energy foods are: grains, seeds, rice, root vegetables, cheese, and apples. It depends on the mixtures of the growing and the combination of the finished product. The balanced foods grow in the dark environment in the flesh of the fruit or vegetable, Yin energy, even though the fruit or vegetable itself has been exposed to the sunshine which is Yang energy.

Eating what is locally grown helps keep your body balanced with the local climate. For example, if you lived in the tropics you would eat the Yin energy fruits such as pineapple, figs, dates, and chilies. These Yin energy foods combat the heat of the Yang tropical climate. Likewise, in colder climates.

Excess of Yin foods will produce: Leukemia, Meningitis, Colitis, Epilepsy, Emphysema, Diabetes, Asthma, Skin cancer, Hypersensitivity, Nervousness. Excess of Yang foods will produce: Jaundice, Gout, Ulcers, Tongue cancer, Lung cancer, Pancreatic cancer, Kidney cancer, Colon cancer, Muscular dystrophy, Anger, Paranoia. Excess of both Yin and Yang foods will produce: Arteriosclerosis, Hepatitis, Uremia, Gallstones, Breast cancer, Uterine cancer, Bladder cancer, Schizophrenia.

"I am extremely glad to have had the opportunity to book my Kung Fu experience through the Martial arts web. More so that they have referred me to the Songshan Shaolin Wushu Academy. This school is by far the best of all the others I've witnessed at the ancient Shaolin Temple grounds. The school under instruction of a genuine Kung Fu Master, Shifu Shi Yan Jun - 34th generation Shaolin warrior Monk was more tuitional than most. Furthermore it has proper chinese chefs, translators and a grand master. You will find excellent trained students and beginners in the school integrated in a fully structured program. Andi M, the manager, speaks a number of languages, will coordinate your program to your level of fitness and health. My month long stay was pleasant and I cant wait to return in summer."

"I absolutely loved my time in Songshan Shaolin Traditional Wushu Academy. I stayed there for one month and during my time there I made some amazing friends, learned an unbelievable amount and got to do it all in an incredible environment. Shifu thought me so much and not just from Kung Fu, but how to be a better person in general.I can't praise Andi highly enough for organising my entire trip. She remained in constant contact with me and looked after me my entire time I was there. The surroundings you are privileged enough to be in are incredible. I have come back a better, happier person than when I arrived. What I experienced and learned within the school are lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life and I would recommend this experience to anybody."

"In 11 months at this academy I learned way more than I expected. My Kung Fu of course improved a lot but I also learned about the culture of China and of Kung Fu, the spirituality, the discipline and a lot about myself. I understand now why masters learn Kung Fu all their life, because is not only a sport, it’s a way of life. Shifu Yan Jun is a really good master, not only because his Kung Fu is impressive but because he understand the students. He see each student in their true nature and helps them improve their Kung Fu and most importantly, helps them find the true path to be happy. Even if he doesn’t speak English really well, we learned a lot from him because of his character. The Academy is located next to the Shaolin temple and the mountains where Dharma meditated during 9 years. We lived in a really spiritual place, with the peaceful energy from the mountains, the temple, and all the monks resting in the Pagoda Forest."

"The training schedule is very diverse, interesting and inspiring. The daily schedule is perfect, I think. Accommodation and food by far exceeded my expectations. I especially value that Shifu always emphasizes the ‘mental’ aspect /strength in training. Very family-like atmosphere. The location inside the Temple is an exceptional experience. My expectations of the Academy were exceeded in every way!"

"Shifu Shi Yan Jun is an expert at not only understanding human behavior and your personal issues but also in communicating with you, heart to heart. He can read what is in your mind and heart. When I came to China I was obese and 42 years old. No chance I will accomplish much my friends told me!But hey, now after more than 16 months of training with Shifu Yan Jun, my life has changed. He forces you to step aside from the situation you got yourself into. He does it so carefully but so effectively and you realize that nothing is the way it is for any reason then you created that for yourself.I learned Shaolin forms and their applications, I do splits and I'm very flexible, I participated at Competitions for Tai Chi Quan and won first place (competing with Chinese as well) but mostly I am in great shape! Have been on TV shows and give Interviews, I learn to cook healthy Chinese food and I'm fluent in Chinese! Shifu's teachings help me always be at my best."

"I choose China because I wanted to try Shaolin Kung Fu since I was very young. My greatest gain is seeing how much I improved over time. All my Shifu influenced me and without their support and guidance I wouldn't improve this much. All my masters made my stay nice and enjoyable. The areas within the Shaolin Academy are very nice and feels very relaxing and peaceful and translators all helped. Shifu also did their best and more."

"I was looking for a Shifu specialized in Sanda. I love to fight and train as hard as I can! I had some Shifu's before. They taught me well but none of them was like my new Shifu, Shi Yan Jun. He is so full of energy and actually willing to spar with me!He is amazing powerful and have an awesome technique and I learn from it very well. The greatest thing is that he was a Sanda Champion in China, so he knows how to fight and have a lot of experience! As well he looks for the balance between hard Sanda training and soft Qigong, Tai Chi to keep the body healthy! It is a pleasure to train with him every day."
