Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline which includes combat on shins is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins.

Muay Thai is associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient. It became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.

Muay Thai can be traced back to the 16th century, developed from the fighting style of the famous fighter Nai Khanomtom. Its ancestor is Muay Boran (or “ancient boxing”), which in the 1930s was formalized with rules and equipment influenced by Western boxing.

Rawai Muay Thai Profile

Rawai Muay Thai Camp in Khao Lak

Tuk and Diana opened Rawai Muay Thai in 2003. Back then there were few Muay Thai gyms around, and hardly any that taught foreigners so they had to start from scratch. The gym was located in Rawai village, in the South of Phuket, thus the name of the camp. First there was only one ring and four bags. With time more boxing rings were built and more trainers hired. But at first there was only one student (Adam from the UK) and two trainers.

Over the years they grew to become one of the premiere Muay Thai gyms in the country with students from all over the world coming to train. They also trained aspiring young Thai boxers who wanted to become champions. Their fighters have boxed in Bangkok’s prestigious stadiums like Lumpini and Rajadamnern, in big promotions like Thai Fight and on TV.

Their boxers have also competed abroad. They have won numerous stadium titles as well as the World Muay Thai Council (WMC) and the World Professional Muay Thai Federation (WPMF) titles. Their goal with every fighter is to make them the best that they can be. They stress fitness and good technique. Their teaching method is the traditional way that Muay Thai has been taught for decades, the way Tuk and his brothers learned growing up.

After 10 exciting years in Phuket they decided to move to the quieter town of Khao Lak. In their opinion Phuket has grown too much and is no longer the best location for training purposes. There are too many distractions there (night clubs, bars, malls, traffic). Khao Lak is a tranquil seaside village, not developed much, perfect for enjoying the sea and nature. And most of all, perfect for focusing on you training.

At Rawai Muay Thai the guests train daily. The gym is spacious, with four large boxing rings, 19 kicking/punching bags, large mirrors, jigsaw mat flooring and fitness room (with air-con); women’s and men’s locker rooms with showers. The rooms surround the gym. They have private and shared accommodation at the camp. There is a nice swimming pool and restaurant as well a a massage hut, gym shop, and gym office. The gym is open daily, 365 days a year.

They welcome people from everywhere who have an interested in learning the Thai national sport. They welcome women and men of all levels, from complete beginners to professional boxers. The classes are a fun workout. One word of warning: they can be addictive!

Rawai Muay Thai-Khao Lak is located about 1 hour north of Phuket airport, following the coastal road. Rawai Muay Thai is 5 km north of Khao Lak town, near Khuk Khak beach, and the J.W. Marriott hotel. The camp is on 8,000 square meters of tropical land, surrounded by coconut trees and palm trees. The area is very quiet and calm, perfect for training and relaxing.

There is much to see and do in Khao Lak. There are beautiful beaches to swim in, waterfalls and parks to visit, shop and eat in the fresh food market, and water activities including snorkeling and diving in the world famous Similan Islands. There is a horse farm, a golf driving range and golf course and elephant camps, all close to the camp as well.

Beaches near the camp

On Saturday mornings we train in the beach. If the weather is good we hop on our scooters and pick-up trucks and head to Khuk Kak Beach, about 2 KM from the camp.

Snorkeling and diving trips to the nearby Similan and Surin Islands is by far the most spectacular thing you can do while visiting Khao Lak. These tropical islands are open only during high season only (mid October to Mid May). Our good friend, Olof, offers boat trips to Similan Islands. He focuses on snorkeling tours to the world famous islands where you can see marine life at its best. For more information you can visit the Poseidon Similan Tours website.

Downtown Khao Lak is located 5 KM south of the camp. You will find restaurants, shop, markets, banks, hotels and more here. Downtown is only a few blocks long and very quiet in the low season (April - October).

Near the gym you can find beautiful waterfalls worth visiting. Tuk's favorite is beautiful waterfall in thailandSai Rung Waterfall (also known as Pak Weep waterfall or Rainbow Waterfall). Is it located near the Pullman Resort hotel and Beyond Resort Hotel, about 15 minutes from the camp. The best time to visit the waterfall is in the rainy season, from June - October.

About 1 hour away from the camp you can reach Khao Sok National Park. It is immense and offers everything from elephant trekking, cave and river tours, floating bungalows and beautiful flora to gaze at. The best time of the year to visit is from November to May.

In Bang Niang (about 3 KM from the camp) and downtown Khao Lak (about 5 KM from the camp) there are lots of restaurants to choose from. We recommend: Green Pepper, Jai, Smile, Pad Thai, Mango Cafe, Aon Cafe,... Pretty much, if there are lots of people eating then the restaurant is good.

Khaolak Horse Club is located 5 KM from Rawai Muay Thai camp, on the road to Chongfah Waterfall. Khun Ju, the owner of the club, has a beautiful horse ranch and offers horseback riding lessons and trails. You can ride the horses through mountain trails and on the beach! For more information and to make a booking call: 093-727-1552.

You can golf at the Navy Golf Course in Thap Lamu which is located about 15 minutes South of the the gym. This beautiful 18 hole golf course has a stunning view of the Andaman Sea.

Arrival by airplane

The closest airport to Khao Lak is Phuket International airport. Most people take a flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Then they take a car ride to Khao Lak (either using our airport pick-up service or the airport taxis).

A flight from Bangkok to Phuket takes approximately 1 hour. A ticket from Bangkok to Phuket can be purchased over the counter at Bangkok International Airport but you will get the best price if you book your domestic flight more than 72 hours in advance.

When booking your domestic flight from Bangkok to Phuket you should allow 3 - 4 hours to clear customs from your international flight & check in for your domestic flight.

Please note: There are 2 airports in Bangkok. Which airport you land at will usually depend on which airline you are traveling with. Most international flights fly into Suvarnabhumi airport. Only a few airlines use Don Muang airport (Nok Air and 1- Go, for example).

Arrival by bus

The bus from Bangkok to Khao Lak takes 11 hours and costs approximately 950 Thai Baht. The bus does, however, pass right through Khao Lak so for those guests who want to take the bus, just let the driver know you want to get off at Khao Lak.

Travel Warning: Bus travels between Bangkok to Khao Lak - Many students have complained that the contents of their bags/ backpacks have been tampered with during the bus trip. Items such as ipods, cameras, and mobile phones are all easily converted into cash by criminals. Lock your bags with a quality padlock whenever you are travelling by bus in Thailand and don't check the bags in the bus baggage compartment. Just keep them in your sight at all times.

Arrival by train

The nearest train station to Khao Lak is 450 km away at Surat Thani. The train ride to Surat Thani is not recommended, mostly because the train runs at night and you can't see anything and the train leaves you really far from Khao Lak.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 25% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.

"My experience at Rawai was excellent and a definite 10/10. The reason for this rating is mainly due to the staff and trainers who were excellent and always going that extra mile to ensure that residents and students were all comfortable and progressing in their training. I observed trainers catering attentively to students of all levels. The accommodation and food in and around the camp was of a good standard. However, I would recommend those not used to the heat to opt for an air conditioned room or look for alternative accommodation in Khao Lak. All in all a wonderful experience and I hope to return again in the near future. "

"When I first arrived to Khao Lak Thailand to begin 1 month of Muay Thai training at Rawai, I had zero background experience with any martial art, let alone Muay Thai. I came in excited anxious but a bit nervous. I had read reviews that this camp was good for all levels but sometimes you just never know. However, what you read is what you got with this place. Truly fantastic. My first 3 days were spent with a trainer, separated from the main group classes to focus privately on learning the foundations of Muay Thai and focusing primarily on the techniques. After 2-3 days and when the trainer thinks you are ready for regular classes, you transition over. For beginners, like myself, I felt more at ease and more confident in my abilities rather than just being thrown directly into the normal classes with no private instruction. From the start, I fell in love with this camp. From the disciplined, motivating, encouraging, yet laid back staff to the friendly open minded and charismatic campers, my one month at Rawai was truly unforgettable. I made lasting friendships with people from all over the world and I will miss the lifestyle and routine I grew so accustomed to at this camp. I look forward to returning again next year....and who knows maybe Ill sign up to do a fight! Until next time Rawai!"

"PS. The customer service at this camp is exceptional. The women in the reception, the house-cleaners, all of the trainers and Diana. You guys rock!"

"The Muay Thai camp is situated about 1.5 hrs drive away from the Phuket Int'l Airport.. but that just adds to the beauty of it. It is far away from distraction and a perfect place to hunker down and concentrate on what you really came for..the art of Muay Thai. They did not disappoint. The owners Tuk and Diana were accommodating and friendly, so were the staff and trainers. I was overweight and out of shape when I arrived.. but at no point did anyone laughed.. they just did what they do best, work me into shape. The trainers were supportive, hard working and most of all humble. Anything you need is right there in camp. For the occasional treat, The Marriott Hotel is just down the road a few kilometers and the beach a few mins away."

"Best holiday adventure I every had and I highly recommend this camp to anyone who wants to get fit, upgrade your skills, or just simply have some holiday fun working out. I will definitely be back.. and soon :P"

"I went along to Thailand with my Sister and didn't even plan on training. Once I got there and saw what was happening, I was hooked. I trained for a week and loved it! I am a raw foodist - I eat 95% Raw Fruits & Vegetables as my daily diet (have been for 11 years)- so training without conditioning before hand was easier for me because my body has lots of energy! You can trust the quality of your training at Rawai Muay Thai. You are safe staying at their camp and will love and cherish the neighboring restaurants specifically Tik Restaurant and the restaurant by the pool on camp. You will detox while you are there, make sure you drink coconut water to stay nourished. Make sure to go to a professional fight in Khao Lak. I was surprised how the camp attendees (who flew in from across the world) drank every weekend and partied in town. I did not agree with that atmosphere. I was respected more by the trainers because they knew I had standards. Good luck training, stay safe, and share the light of Christ!"

"This is one of the nicest gyms I've ever been to. We arranged VIP one on one instructor for each of my 3 girls age 9,12,14. The instructors were brilliant and very patient. My girls loved it and me and my wife were allowed to walk round taking pictures and videos with no complaints. The lodging here is very new and clean and we got speaking to some Dutch people who travel all over the world training and they said it was the best and cleanest place that they have been to. Really worth going to do something different with your kids"

"The accommodation was amazing, so clean with plenty of space, storage, security, and free wifi throughout. Training was quite busy in January as it was peak season so they broke it down in to 2 afternoon sessions. I had personal training sessions with an instructor I felt comfortable with. They were all very friendly but I had a preference on how they hold pads like im sure you will. There is a fully equipped store there for any equipment or clothing you will need and compared to the prices I pay in England was very reasonable. They have scooter hire on location and 3 places to eat with a pool as well."

The staff are worderful and they make everyone from beginner to pro-fighter feel at home and part of the Rawai camp family."

"We spent 12 days on this camp and had a great time. A great place to learn Muay Thai. A couple of things to note (Diana), as people are there to train it would be nice to have the rooms cleaned and towels changed on a daily basis, without having to ask. It felt like we were nagging when it should be standard. Trimming the grass etc. doesn't have to be at 5am does it?Also, if you're in a rush for your laundry, take note it will take minimum of 3 days. People can walk off with your laundry as they're left randomly in the office for collection. Buy your gear before you get to camp as everything is double. Other than that, we had a blast and we'll be back for longer next year."

"We took our 2 teenagers aged 14 and 16 here for a couple days of training and they really enjoyed the entire experience. They even mentioned coming back for a longer period of time. The accommodation was great, with good TV and internet. The little restaurant called Kenton's Ring Five was a revelation. The Thai food (and everything else) was absolutely delicious. Kenton and his chef Tum also organized a cooking class for us in the afternoon and we made 4 yummy dishes that we shared with our boys. A real highlight for us."
