You will stay at Sensei Miyasaka's traditional family hostel. There are eight bedrooms which can accommodate from one to four people each. Sleeping is on the floor, on Japanese traditional Futon. You will share the bathroom and toilets.

What you will learn and probably take home

Acquire Hassetsu or the "eight stages of shooting" in Japanese archery

  • Be comfortable with karabiki training
  • Handling and maintenance of the equipment
  • Shooting at makiwara (specially designed straw target)
  • Advanced beginners and advanced shooters can practice shooting at makiwara, mato, and some with omato
  • Competition preparation for the more advanced ones
  • Manifest the three elements of attitude, movement, and technique unite in a state of perfect harmony
  • Maintains composure and grace even in times of great stress or conflict

What you have to be honest with

  • Master Miyasaka's English is very good but not fluent, be indulgent
  • His Ryokan is very comfortable but do not expect a 5-star hotel
  • You may save money if you eat lunches or dinners outside. It is just less practical. So up to you

Typical daily schedule

  • 08:00 Traditional Japanese breakfast
  • 10:00 Kyudo training
  • 12:30 You choose to have lunch at Uotoshi or somewhere else
  • 14:00 Kyudo practice
  • 16:30 Rest of exploring the area
  • 18:30 You have the choice to dine out around the Dojo. Sensei Miyasaka will recommend you delicious and affordable restaurants.
  • 20:30 You can enjoy the hostel natural hot spring

Please note that there are only six days of practicing. Upon arrival and departure day, there will be no Kyudo class.

  • Kazuhisa Miyasaka

    Sensei Miyasaka is a 6th Dan and 3rd generation Kyudo Master. He owns a traditional Japanese Ryokan, Uotoshi, located in the town of Yudanaka-Shibu Hot Spring Resort, near the famous monkey hot springs. Sensei Miyasaka possesses great dignity, grace, and an amazing sense of hospitality. These qualities, coupled with his skill and knowledge of Kyudo make him the perfect model of a master. His dojo, or the "place of the way," is full of pictures, certificates, diplomas, and targets hanging on its walls, clearly displaying his position and the high regard in which his accomplishments are held.

The retreat will take place near Nagano, Japan.

Master Miyasaka will be happy to recommand you some traditional Japanese restaurants within 10 minutes distance from his Ryokan

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Matsumoto Airport (MMJ). Then go by train to Yudanaka-Shibu train station.

Arrival by train

You simply have to reach Yudanaka-Shibu train station. You will be picked up from there. Date and time will be arranged after your booking confirmation.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 25% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
