  • Master Iain Armstrong

Master Iain is a Kung Fu philosopher and author with 36 years of living Kung Fu. Trained personally by Grand Master Tan Soh Tin in Singapore, he’s a two-time world champion and veteran of real street battles. Famous for his high-quality Kung Fu teaching, his instructional films and magazine articles, and for his demonstrations of Iron Shirt Chi Kung, Master Iain is a mine of information but retains a very practical, down to earth, and realistic approach. Most people who meet him are struck by his air of calm, patience, and wisdom.

  • Michael Worthman

Michael is an enthusiastic teacher whilst at the same time maintaining a very relaxed attitude. He first came to the Kung Fu Retreat in 2015 and loved what he found so much that he returned home and worked hard until he had saved enough money to return and join the instructor training program. He intends in the future to open his own Kung Fu school. Although he has lived most of his life in the US, Michael is originally from Guatemala and speaks Spanish as well as English.

This training will take place in Antigua, Guatemala, in a beautiful valley surrounded by three volcanoes (two of them active), the mountains, and fresh mountain air. The sunrise, which students will be able to witness during morning training, is truly breathtaking. The sunset is equally majestic and after that, if students are lucky, they’ll get to see the lava spewing out of Volcan De Fuego, a truly unique experience.

Suffice it to say that the view from the rooftop, at any time of day or night, is something to behold. Students will leave with a collection of amazing photographs! Learning Kung Fu and Chi Kung in such a beautiful setting will be a truly unique experience.

The warm people of Guatemala, the near perfect weather year round, make Guatemala a perfect vacation spot. Guatemala is known as the land of eternal spring, the fresh mountain air, and beginning the lifelong journey that is Kung fu come together to make this a truly life-changing experience. Guatemala is a very beautiful country with very warm, happy, and welcoming people. Antigua itself is a Unesco world heritage site and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is easily walkable and convenient.

While speaking Spanish helps, English is becoming more and more common and students will have no trouble finding what they need in either language. Antigua is famous for its incredibly well preserved Spanish Baroque architecture, many ruins, and colonial churches. Students will have the opportunity to walk the cobblestone streets as much as they looked hundreds of years ago while encountering markets, street musicians, and some of the best coffee in the world.

Breakfast and dinner will be provided on all training days. For lunches, students are encouraged to try some of the local cuisines in town. There are many restaurants in Antigua and can satisfy any appetite. Whether it’s French, Italian, Indian, Thai or traditional Guatemalan cuisine, Antigua has something for everyone.

The food that will be prepared for meals on training days will always be fresh and healthy, coming from the large local farmers market on the other side of town. This is a good way to support local families and local farmers as well as eat the healthiest food for the best price.

Meals will always be prepared with a Kung Fu lifestyle in mind, both healthy and beneficial for body and mind. There will always be rice and black beans, two staples of the Guatemalan diet, which will provide the majority of the proteins and carbohydrates needed for a full training day. You will also have fresh fruit and vegetables in abundance.

Most dishes will be vegetarian, but there will be meat served as well. Vegan options are also available. Hot tea will be provided twice per day, usually, a quality Chinese tea coinciding with the Kung Fu lifestyle, or a more herbal tea for general health.

Both Master Iain and Michael will eat every breakfast and dinner with the students, providing an ideal time for Kung Fu related questions and discussion. Please note that special diets can be catered only if you provide notice to Nam Yang Kung Fu Retreat in advance.
