Muay Thai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking, along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline which includes combat on shins is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins, being associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient. Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.
Muay Thai can be traced back to the 16th century, developed from the fighting style of the famous fighter Nai Khanomtom. Its ancestor is Muay Boran (or ancient boxing), which in the 1930s was formalized with rules and equipment influenced by Western boxing.
You do not need to speak Spanish. Although knowing Spanish would obviously help, its not a necessity. Most Costa Ricans speak a little bit of English, and the workers around Jungles Edge have very good English speaking skills.
Although experience in Muay Thai prior to coming to this retreat is good to have, it is not required. Ideally you should have some experience in training Muay Thai, whether it be taking a couple classes or practicing by yourself at home. However, these retreats are open to anyone who is passionate about learning Muay Thai and is willing to put in some quality sessions during their stay. Skill levels generally range from complete beginners to amateur fighters and everything in between.
Sean Fagan, or the Muay Thai Guy, grew up in New Paltz, New York, USA, and started training Muay Thai in 2008 at Black and Blue MMA in Kingston, NY. His first fight was in Thailand. Currently, his record is 19-7 and he holds the TKO and WKA US national title at 145lbs. To him, Muay Thai is more than just a sport, it's a way of life.
Costa Rica is Central America's jewel. It's an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbors and an ecotourism heaven, making it one of the best places to experience the tropics with minimal impact. It's also mostly coastline, which means great surfing, beaches galore, and a climate built for laziness.
Costa Rica's enlightened approach to conservation has ensured that lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, languid sloths, crocodiles, countless lizards, poison-dart frogs, and a mind-boggling assortment of exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Meanwhile, endangered sea turtles nest on both coasts and cloud forests protect elusive birds and jungle cats.
Thrill seekers can fly through forests on zip lines, peer into boiling volcanoes, surf oversized waves and dive with dolphins and whales - all in the course of a normal day. Then again, if you have some serious chilling to do, you can always lounge in a hammock and enjoy the pure life, or pura vida - a national expression that sums up the desire to live the best, most hassle-free existence.
Nosara is a village and district in the Nicoya canton, Guanacaste province of Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast. For decades local associations have kept the beaches clean and the surrounding protected national parks and forest relatively undeveloped. It has the cleanest water table in all of Costa Rica, with clean ocean water and no dumping of gray or black water into the streams or beaches. It is one of the few coastal towns that lacks nearly any development on the beach.
This unique combination of North American culture and pristine Costa Rican wilderness attracts all kinds including the rich and famous. Woody Harrelson, Liv Schreiber, and several wealthy individuals have either lived here or visited in recent years. High demand has led real estate to soar but people continue to move and to buy. The quality of life here is so high, many choose to relocate regardless of the cost.
