Krav Maga History

The art of Krav Maga was founded by Imi Lichtenfeld (Sde - Or). Imi was born in Bratislava to a renowned police officer and circus acrobat. As a child, Imi excelled in various sports such as wrestling and boxing and practiced several martial arts. When anti-semite riots began to spread through his home town, Imi and his family were forced to immigrate to Israel (Palestine at the time).

In 1948, once Israel had declared its independence, IDF's (Israeli Defense Force) officials approached Imi and requested him to develop a system of self defense and fighting based upon his experience and his work with special forces units as the 'Hagana', 'Palmach', and 'Palyam'.

During his 20 years of service as chief instructor of hand-to-hand combat, Imi carefully refined the methods of Krav Maga, making it the official combative training for all military personnel, Israeli police, and security forces. Imi developed a doctrine enabling both fit and out-of-shape soldiers to practice it successfully. Rather than rigid movements and techniques requiring years of training, Krav Maga integrated instinctive and simple moves accessible to all.

In 1964, Imi retired from the IDF and continued teaching Krav Maga to civilians, as well as law enforcement units and military applications. The Krav Maga association was founded by Imi and several of his students in 1978, aiming to promote Krav Maga's unique techniques locally and throughout the world.

Krav Maga International

Krav Maga International (KMI) was founded by the people who lead the Israel Defense Force (IDF) Krav Maga program. KMI is everything you expect when you think of a battle-tested fighting system that provides real solutions to real threats. Their program is the most innovative, hardcore, and comprehensive Krav Maga training program. They take you beyond theory. They make you into a fighter. With their first-hand experience leading IDF Krav Maga training and certification programs, they provide the most effective and practical hand-to-hand training program anywhere.

Mastery and accuracy in complex techniques are great in the dojo, but KMI takes you out into the real world, where the stress of sudden life-or-death situations makes complex motor skills impossible. Their emphasis on simplicity means you train on a tighter and more focused syllabus. Their training system focuses on skill, strength, and developing real fighting experience, that prepares you for the worst.

KMI Training Methodology

You begin with fighting basics, punching, kicking, and wrestling techniques, developing the most relevant and effective fighting skills. You then progress to complex problems, including facing armed attackers, protecting loved ones, and fighting multiple attackers. To maximize your chances under stress in real-life emergencies, KMI emphasizes simplicity and effectiveness.

Strength and fitness

Krav Maga was developed for IDF soldiers, who train hard and reach high levels of fitness. To become a KMI instructor, to be a fighter, you have to be fit. At KMI, you work hard, using our cutting-edge training methods, including some of the same drills and tests the IDF uses today for its soldiers. After our courses, you have the tools and techniques to become as strong and fit as a Krav Maga instructor should be.

Fighting experience

To be truly effective in Krav Maga, you need the character traits of a fighter - persistence, determination, and courage. The only way to prepare for a fight is to train and gain practical fighting experience. KMI’s programs help you forge your character and body through hard work and experience. At KMI, you gradually and systematically go through full-contact training exercises and sparring, in a safe and responsible manner that makes even the toughest drills approachable. Completing the courses helps you keep a level head, functioning practically under stress, and responding effectively when caught off-guard. These qualities are crucial to surviving attacks, whether you’re a soldier, a police officer, or a civilian.

The official name is Tel Aviv-Yafo, and reflects the fact that the city has grown beside (and absorbed) the ancient port city of Yafo, to the south of the new city center, in addition to many other neighboring cities. Tel Aviv is home to most foreign embassies.

There are a lot to do in Tel Aviv, from the each to its various amusement and water parks, from the performing arts events to the sports venues, from its local markets to high-end shopping malls. Tel Aviv also hosts a number of festivals, as well as offers a range of restaurants for every budget and every taste.

Israel, a Middle Eastern country on the Mediterranean Sea, is regarded by Jews, Christians and Muslims as the biblical Holy Land. Its most sacred sites are in Jerusalem. Within its Old City, the Temple Mount complex includes the Dome of the Rock shrine, the historic Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Its financial hub, Tel Aviv, is known for Bauhaus architecture, beaches and nightlife. Israel is also known for being the birthplace of Krav Maga.

"I have trained under two Krav Maga organizations, both in Israel and the UK, but the KMI is something special, both in its founder and again it is basically an Israel-born organization, with its founder having been in charge of Krav Maga training to the IDF. This is pure, Israeli, Krav Maga, second to none."
