Global estimates indicate that about one in three women worldwide has experienced either physical and/or sexual violence in her lifetime.
This unique "Stay Away" program, developed by the International Krav Maga Federation over the last twenty years, is one of the leading self-defense curricula for women.
It is suitable for participants of all levels of fitness and abilities, and no prior experience in martial arts is required.
During this course, you will stay at a deluxe six-bed female dorm en-suite at the Two Pillows Boutique Hostel in Sliema.
The hostel is situated right in the heart of Sliema opposite Valletta, the capital city of Malta, in one of the most central, convenient yet tranquil areas on the island.
They are a stone’s throw away from the sea and within walking distance to some great beaches and lidos. You can stroll down to cafes, bars, and restaurants in just a couple of minutes. Shops and supermarkets are minutes away.
Modern design was blended with the old architecture to help offer the best amenities to the guests. These include a spa equipped with a Jacuzzi and sauna to help you unwind after a day of training. Other common spaces include a fully equipped kitchen, breakfast area, outside terrace, and chill-out room with TV and book exchange.
The self-defense techniques and tactics of this Stay Away program have been developed since 1997 by the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) and deal with situations from a woman's daily routine, point out scenarios where a threat may appear and teaches, systematically, how to maintain your calm, defend yourself, and eliminate the danger.
Krav Maga courses for women focus on sexual assault scenarios and involve substantial mental training to enable the participants to foster self-confidence and prevent an assault from happening whenever possible.
Additional issues included in women self-defense have to do with home invasion, third side protection (protecting your children), and using common objects (keys, handbag etc.) to block the assailant and counterattack. Since 1997, over 30,000 women around the world have attended a Stay Away program.
Since its inception, the Stay Away program has evolved, but the core has remained constant. It tackles differences between attackers and women and focuses on women’s size and strength while giving paramount attention to mental tactics to prevent an attack.
The training will start at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 21 at IKMF's dojo in Marsascala (transportation will be provided from your hotel, departing at 8 a.m.). During the three days, training will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and from 1.30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to Krav Maga techniques, the following topics will be dealt with:
Please note that the IKMF in Malta does not want money to be the actual reason why someone would not take part in this course. So if you truly cannot afford the subscription fees, please send an inquiry, and they will get back to you.
Igal is the country director of the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) in Malta. He is a former member of the military forces of Israel, and in addition to Krav Maga, also teaches kung fu and aikido.
Arnaud is an alumnus of the IKMF in Malta and evolved to become a civilian instructor (regular courses for adults), as well as an instructor of the "Stay Away" program for women. He currently lives in the Philippines.
Marsaskala, gathered around the head of a long, narrow bay, was originally a Sicilian fishing community: the name means "Sicilian harbor". Today, it is an increasingly popular residential area and seaside resort among the Maltese. It appeals because of its calmness, great restaurants, local feel, and bustling, boat-bobbing little harbor.
The nearby beaches of St. Thomas Bay and St. Peter’s Pool also attract many swimmers. Other than to chill out, Marsaskala does not offer much else. There are some historical towers worth a visit. Also chapels and salt pans that might be interesting. Overall, this is a village where one goes to relax.
