What’s the interaction with other campers and instructors like?

There will be between 30-40 people on the mats. You will have access to the instructors to ask questions and they also offer privates for an additional cost while you’re here. All the campers will stay in the same hotel and you will share the common spaces. Your interaction level is up to you. As much or as little as you like.

Everyone has breakfast together before training and there are excursions and outings planned every day. Everything is optional. There will be a WhatsApp group and people constantly communicate through that to see what everyone is doing.

You will typically have two sessions a day. Each session is one to one and a half long. Of course, you can train more. If you are a glutton for punishment the team can set up some extra mat time for you.

What’s the training space like?

Hero Academy is a 4,000+ square foot training facility. Open-air with a nice cross breeze. Plenty of mat space for a large group.

Family-friendly retreat

This retreat is family-friendly. If you want to add your family, Hero Academy BJJ Costa Rica is happy to work out some pricing for you. Just let them know will happily customize your accommodations and get you some pricing.

You can also come alone. You will make new best friends on the first day. Many ‘new’ people come every year and are quickly welcomed into the family. Most people attending Hero Camps, return and attend multiple camps per year with different instructors. This experience is second to none.

Sample daily schedule

Day 1: Saturday (arrival day)

• Be greeted at the airport by the staff for your shared shuttle to Tamarindo Bay Boutique Resort
• Welcome to your home for the week at the hotel from Bathsheeba and her staff
• 18:00 Meet Ron and Holly - meet and greet at the hotel once everyone has arrived (short meeting with the group and introduction to Tama and Ron and Holly will be happy to answer any questions)
• 19:00 The night is yours to explore the town - enjoy a nice dinner or drink.

Day 2: Sunday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• 09:00 Morning no gi session
• 10:30 Enjoy your morning in town or relax poolside with your new friends
• 12:00 Optional lunch at Falafel bar near the hotel for healthy food
• 16:00 Afternoon gi session
• 17:30 Optional meet up for sunset on the beach at El Be Restaurant
• 20:00 Optional activity sound journey Relax while bathed in relaxing sounds on gongs and crystal bowls

Day 3: Monday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• 09:00 Morning no gi session
• 11:00 - 13:00 Optional activity ATV adventure and explore nearby beaches
• 12:00 Optional lunch at El Mercadito - there are many options for every appetite
• 17:30 Optional meet up for sunset at The Roof restaurant (the restaurant has beautiful panoramic views)
• 20:00 Night gi session

Day 4: Tuesday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• 09:00 Morning yoga session at the loft at Hero Academy
• 12:00 Optional lunch Taco Tuesday at Little Lucha Taqueria
• 13:00 Optional activity surf lessons at the beach
• 17:30 Sunset gi session
• The evening is yours to enjoy

Day 5: Wednesday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• 09:30 Morning gi session
• Enjoy your afternoon
• 17:00 Optional Meet the kids of Hero Academy that benefit from your retreat and watch them practice jiu-jitsu
• 18:15 Evening gi session
• 20:30 Optional but recommended group dinner at DragonFly restaurant

Day 6: Thursday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• 09:00 - 11:00 Double morning no gi session
• 12:30 Optional but recommended group activity such as boat cruise, relaxing sailboat ride out to a private reef to do some snorkeling and enjoy an open bar onboard the boat and homemade lunch while you lounge on the spacious catamaran (return in time to catch the sunset from the boat)
• 18:00 - 20:00 Optional night market - open air street vendors with food and drinks

Day 7: Friday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• 09:00 Morning no gi session
• 10:30 Enjoy your morning in town or relax poolside with your new friends
• 16:00 Final gi session
• 17:30 Optional meet up for sunset on the beach at Johnny Tamarindo restaurant

Day 8: Saturday

• 07:30 Breakfast on the hotel terrace with your fellow retreat goers
• Shuttle driver picks you up from the hotel to make your scheduled departure

This retreat will take place at Hero Academy BJJ 501(c)(3) Non-Profit. It is just a three minutes walk to the center of Tamarindo and five minutes to the legendary Tamarindo Beach.

Tamarindo is the quintessential Costa Rican surf town perfect for beginner to intermediate surfing and swimming. The beach is lined with bars and restaurants. The town itself is a small but popular tourist destination. Sunset is an event here every day. The entire town comes down to the beach to enjoy the end of the day. Lots of bars and restaurants to cater to every need.

Enjoy a chef-prepared breakfast daily. Lunch and dinner are not included. However, there are options for every budget. If you want to eat for 20 bucks a day or have a nice steak dinner, just talk to Hero Academy BJJ Costa Rica and they will give you all of the options that are available around the area.

You can come with your spouse or guest, non-training spouse or guest will need to pay 500 USD. Hero Academy BJJ Costa Rica can help to set up anything you want to do. You can check out volcanoes, have mud baths, visit hot springs and waterfalls, zipline, horseback rides on the beach, spearfishing, surf lessons, deep-sea fishing, ATV, Catamaran sunset cruise, and much more. Most activities are about 80 USD to 100 USD.
