Because Escrima Arnis Martial Arts Training Camp focuses extensively on fighting skills and technique, they do not fill their classes with anaerobic exercises or waste lesson time with fitness, running, and other exercises as they feel that these can be done by the student themselves or done at an external fitness class. What they teach is practical combat, covering hand-to-hand, stick, knife, and weapon defense. Although cardio and fitness are an important part of martial arts, Escrima Arnis Martial Arts Camp expects that these be undertaken on your own time.

Eskrima

Eskrima or Arnis is the primary name for Filipino Martial Arts. Many different systems of Eskrima exist. In most systems, skills with weapons and with empty hands are developed at the same time, using training methods designed to emphasize the common elements. Practitioners of these arts are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably. Most Eskrima systems include fighting with a variety of weapons, striking with hands and feet (kickboxing), grappling, throwing, biting, and all the other skills that would be needed for a warrior's complete training in the old days of tribal warfare.

Weapons

The most obvious feature of an Eskrima class is that it is usually weapon-based. Most systems begin by teaching the student to work with weapons, and only progress to empty-hand techniques once the stick techniques have been learned. This is reasonable because most systems have unified their teaching so that the empty-hand techniques are learned through the same exercises as the weapon techniques.

The most common weapon used in training is a rattan stick about the length of the practitioner's arm; in the Philippines, these are known as sparring sticks as they are light enough that they can be used for sparring with no protection. Most North American and European schools use protection when sparring with rattan sticks.

Other sticks used for training and for some duels are made of hardwood that is burned and hardened. They can also be made out of metals such as aluminum or can be padded for training purposes. The length of the sticks used in Eskrima classes varies from about 45cm to 70cm for single-handed sticks. Some schools prefer sticks of a particular length, while others expect students to learn which techniques are appropriate for a variety of lengths.

Strikes

Many Filipino systems focus on defending against angles of attack rather than particular strikes. The theory behind this is that the technique for defending against an attack that comes straight down the center is very similar whether the attacker has an empty hand, a knife, a sword or a spear. Older Filipino systems gave each angle a name, but more recent systems tend to simply number them. Usually a system will have twelve standard angles, although what these angles are and how they are numbered vary from system to system. These standard angles are used to describe exercises; to aid memorization, a standard series of strikes from these angles called an abecederio is often practiced.

Escrima Arnis Martial Arts Training Camp

Escrima Arnis Martial Arts Training Camp is a martial arts Escrima Arnis Kung Fu training school based in Cebu in the Philippines. They service foreigners visiting the Philippines to further their martial arts training.

Their training philosophy is to give you as much knowledge as possible in the time you are here. The areas covered are the essentials in knife, stick and hand fighting. Escrima Arnis Martial Arts Training Camp do drills, teach knife and stick weaponry.

They fill valuable class time with anaerobic or exercises for fitness. They feel a student can do this on his own time out of lesson time. They encourage all forms of martial arts, physical fitness and meditations but our class time is for learning new understandings of martial arts, anatomy, leverage, gravitational forces, pressure points, effective body movements all in the inclination of becoming a more proficient martial arts street capable fighter.

Escrima Arnis Martial Arts Training Camp is not training any sports based competitive methods. Actually what they teach would be considered a constant breach of the rules in competitive hand to hand or stick fighting. Yet they teach and train in a friendly cordial fashion as they train for street defense not street attack.

The Martial Island Tour is a 3-5 day boat tour on the camps rental dive boat. You will be staying overnight in backpacker lodgings in three locations. You can explore the captivating islands of Negros and Dumaguete, and then move on to the mystical healers and spectacular diving spots of Siquijor while finishing in the Panglao Island of Bohol, where you can take in the magnificent waters and enjoy a fine diving atmosphere. Escrima Arnis Marital Arts Training Camp is located in beautiful Camotes islands in Cebu. The Camotes Islands are made up of the islands of Pacjian, Ponson, Poro and Tulang. Collectively, they are called “The Lost Horizon in the South” because of their unspoiled beauty. And once you sink your toes into the fine white sand here, it’s easy to see why. Beaches like Santiago Bay and Mangodlong, with glistening waters and relaxed shores, are excellent places to swim and sunbathe undisturbed.

Further inland, Pacjian is home to the serene 700-hectare Lake Danao. Dubbed “Lover’s Lake” for its seclusion, Lake Danao is the biggest natural lake in Cebu. Enjoy a boat cruise, hike and picnic, or go bird-watching to catch species like the purple heron and the Philippine wild duck.

Raring for some adventure? Check out Bukilat Cave in Tudela. Beneath its rough exterior lie imposing stalagmites and stalactites, as well as an icy-cold pool believed to originate from an underground spring. This entire cave system is illuminated by natural skylights.

Another stunning subterranean secret is the challenging Timubo Cave in Sonog, where you need to make your way down a winding staircase to reach the clear waters within. Life here may be slow-paced, but the islands do hold several festivals. The Tagbo Festival in January celebrates the founding of the town of Poro, through a re-enactment of the reconciliation of two warring tribes.

The Soli-Soli Festival, held every third Sunday of March in the town of San Francisco, is a creative tribute to the soli-soli plant – a source of livelihood for the locals. This festival also serves as a thanksgiving to the town’s patron saint.
