Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is the name Bruce Lee gave to his own personal theories and principles on streetfighting. Jeet Kune Do was designed by Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto. This martial art system and fighting strategy are quick, effective, and limitless. Emphasizing the ranges of combat, students are taught to confidently and with ease flow from long distance (kicking-range) to middle distance (hand-range) to close quarters (trapping and grappling range).

Anderson Martial Arts has been teaching Jeet Kune Do to New York City community for over two decades. They are still the only school in Manhattan equipped with the knowledge, lineage, and certification under the Inosanto Academy to bring this art to the public.

Five ranges of fighting

  • Kicking
  • Punching
  • Trapping
  • Grappling
  • Weapons (defense and offense)

The goal for the students is to help them become a well-rounded fighter who can adapt to any range, opponent, or situation.

Jeet Kune Do was created to not only make fighting quick and simple but also open-ended so that the user can blend his or her own styles and preferences into the mix and have their own unique product. The school teaches you the correct way to do this effectively, at any age.

Jeet Kune Do's movements are crisp and efficient, utilizing the most direct lines and angles. Anderson Martial Art’s classes afford the practitioner a means by which to effectively pursue the most direct line of attack. And once an attack has been launched, there are no breaks or interruptions until your opponent(s) are finished.

As one technique nears completion, it starts to blend into the next and so forth: one continuous flowing motion until the conflict is resolved. That is Jeet Kune Do. These techniques are taught in Jeet Kune Do 1, 2, and 3 classes, as well as Jeet Kune Do street fighting classes.

The mentality is also deeply rooted in every art and class they offer (both sport and combat). Students are taught to blend all of the arts the instructors teach and as a result, have the best possible preparation for any situation that may arise.

Muay Thai

At Anderson Martial Arts, the art of Muay Thai is simple and brutally effective. Muay Thai is one of the world’s most effective striking based arts. Anderson Martial Arts has been teaching Muay Thai for over two decades, and they are proud to say that their classes are host to a great variety of people ranging in skills and goals. They have developed countless Muay Thai champions, but their greatest pride stays with giving this amazing art to their general students; men and women of all ages, fitness levels, and goals.

What makes Muay Thai such an effective art?

Muay Thai, known as the “science of eight limbs,” includes punching, elbows, knees, kicks, and Anderson Martial Arts adds in the ninth, the head. The art also teaches some of the most effective clinching techniques. It is the national sport and martial art of Thailand, and an effective art for superior physical fitness and devastating self-defense.

Known for its practicality, power, and speed, it specializes in powerful kicks and strikes with the knees, elbows, and standing grappling. Besides proving itself as the toughest ring sport, Thai boxing is an excellent addition to self-defense curriculum.

What can you expect from Muay Thai classes?

Muay Thai is one of the world’s most effective striking based arts. The instructors will teach you to use it effectively and competitively. After training in their Muay Thai classes, your self-defense skills will reach new heights, your body will rise to new physical levels you never thought were possible, as will your conditioning.

Muay Thai: competition vs self-defense?

While most of the students never have a goal to compete, those that do will have a great home place for their professional and amateur fight goals. Anderson Martial Arts is proud to say that they have produced many world and state champions in Muay Thai - they even have a special competition team training for those whose goal it is to fight in the ring.

If you want to learn real Muay Thai for self-defense and fitness, the school delivers - they’ve been teaching the art to a great variety of individuals for over two decades. Beginners and those with experience are welcome to classes, as they have multiple instructors helping and guiding students in class.

Kali (Filipino martial arts and weapon)

Filipino martial arts (Kali) is an extremely effective and battle-tested weapons-based system. The bulk of your training in this art will be with weapons such as the stick, knife, and staff.

Anderson Martia Arts also teaches various empty hand systems that are taken from this dynamic and functional art. The training methods of the Filipino martial arts will increase your empty hand skills by supercharging such attributes as coordination, perception, and awareness.

One of the main goals of training in this system is to give you the ability to pick up everyday objects and use them to your advantages such as car keys, an umbrella, the chair you’re sitting on, or even the jacket you’re wearing. All of these are weapons in the hand of a skilled Filipino martial arts practitioner. There is no substitute for the confidence that comes from knowing you can handle what ever may happen.

This kind of martial arts has been utilized in a different military or government combat training camps, including Navy Seals, Marines, CIA, FBI,and DEA. It has also been widely used in many popular action movies such as The Bourne Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum and Legacy (Matt Damon), Mission Impossible 4 (Tom Cruise), Resident Evil (Milla Jovovich), The Book Of Eli (Denzel Washington), Spartacus (Showtime Series), and Star Wars (Episodes I, II, and III).

There is a major reason this art was used in the movies above; because it works. Not only does it look good on camera, but its effectiveness is battle-tested in real life situations. Books, keys, pens, and other everyday props can become very dangerous weapons in the hands of a trained Kali student.

Kali stems from the Philippines and has many different arts or forms. Anderson Martial Arts teaches the Inosanto Lacoste method which is a blend of 26 different styles of Kali. Anderson Martial Arts is the only school in New York City that is certified to teach this method of Kali.

The method itself was created by Guru Dan Inosanto, protege and best friend of the late Bruce Lee himself as well as the choreographer of many of the above movies. Sifu Dan Anderson, head instructor of Kali classes at Anderson Martial Arts Academy, is certified by Guru Inosanto to teach the Inosanto Lacoste method.

What the Kali classes will teach you

The bulk of your training in this art will be with weapons such as the stick, knife, and staff. They also teach various empty hand systems that are taken from this dynamic and functional art such as Panantukan (Filipino boxing). The training methods of the Filipino martial arts will increase your empty hand skills by supercharging such attributes as coordination, reflexes, perception, and awareness.

As mentioned above, everyday props such as car keys, keys, pens, your umbrella, and even the jacket your wearing are all potentially effective self-defense weapons in the hand of a skilled Filipino martial arts practitioner. Kali classes teach you to utilize anything and everything to your advantage should the situation ever arise. There is no substitute for the confidence that comes from knowing you can handle whatever may happen.

Other areas studied in the Filipino martial arts

  • Single stick
  • Double stick
  • Single knife
  • Double knife
  • Panantuken (Filipino boxing)
  • Staff or spear axe
  • Throwing weapons (darts, knives, etc.)

Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is primarily a ground-based art. The goal of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to learn how to effectively handle a ground attack. For example, imagine for a moment an assailant tackling you to the ground and sitting on your chest.

Now imagine that he is preparing to begin to rain down punches to your head. What if this assailant in addition to everything going on also outweighs you by 50, 80, or even 100 pounds? What could you do to defend yourself? How would you survive? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is your answer.

Anderson Martial Arts' Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes

Training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes will give you the skills and strategy to beat a much larger and stronger opponent using principles of leverage and movement. You will learn how to control and dominate your opponent on the ground until you can either get to a position where you can rain blows upon them unchecked or apply an agonizing joint submission or choke.

You will also learn how to escape from any bad position you may find yourself in and the skills to avoid being taken to the ground at all. If you do end up on the ground, you will gain the ability to end up on top, every time!

Anderson Martial Arts has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi and no-Gi classes for all levels. When coming into a Gi class, please have a Gi and belt as your uniform. For no Gi classes, you can wear a rash guard or t-shirt and shorts or pants.
